Esteemed conductor Nicholas Hersh will lead the Houston Symphony on this momentous performance in Woodlands. Described as “versatile and energetic” by his peers, fans, and critics, Hersh has been praised for his innovation and knack for connecting with musicians and audiences. Last season, he performed with several world-class orchestras, such as The Florida Orchestra, the New Jersey Symphony, Colorado and Modesto Symphonies. His impressive tenure as associate conductor for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra has brought his career to new heights, and he’s now set to lead the Houston Symphony this September.
The Houston Symphony has set an ambitious goal for itself. Founded in 1913, the orchestra has presented world-class music to the public. The symphony often holds concerts in outdoor venues, such as the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, making the music accessible to entire families and groups. This provides an approachable and friendly atmosphere, steering away from the misconception that classical music is only for the affluent. Over the years, Houston Symphony has immensely grown and become one of the most innovative orchestras in the country.
In 2014, they gave themselves a goal – in ten years, they will be the most “relevant and accessible top-ten orchestra.” The group aims for inclusivity and pledges to improve their reach to all types of audiences. Since their formation, the symphony has performed annually for over half a million audiences. Their low-cost events cater to over 225,000 people. Moreover, the symphony has a collective 1.3 million listeners through live and digital events.
As of 2021, the Houston Symphony has over 87 musicians. The orchestra is led by distinguished music director Juraj Vulcuha. The critically-acclaimed director is on his first season with the group and is ecstatic about what’s to come. During his inauguration last year, he expressed his excitement, “My first season with the Symphony will show the path I will take as music director, with programs that combine the great masterpieces of the Classical and Romantic periods with new and rarely performed works of the fantastic twentieth century. We will also devote some programs to choral works and an opera in concert. The wonderful Houston Symphony has tradition and a strong heritage, innovation, artistic energy, and creativity—all tools the orchestra and I have at our disposal to create great musical moments for the community. I cannot wait to get started!”
